The City of Boulder is surrounded by 72 square miles of protected land with over 150 miles of trails. Could you hike them all in a year? Too many miles? Not enough? Maybe you don’t have 5 straight months off and thousands of dollars to hike the Pacific Crest trail? Join Open Space and Mountain Parks staff for a colorful presentation to discover what challenge is best for you in 2017. – Find out about OSMP’s forgotten trails. – Learn the benefits of workouts in nature. – Get some hiking tips to make the most of each season. – Learn about some of our exciting, local hazards and how to cope with muddy and icy trails. If you want to spice up your challenge with some climbing, biking or some nature education, we can help with that as well.

Heil Valley Ranch Trail Work Day

Saturday October 22, 2016

Have you ever wanted to “give back” to our public land management agencies for the enjoyment you receive from our beautiful trails?  Would you like to meet other like-minded trail users? Well, here’s your opportunity!

BCHA and BATCO will be joining forces on Saturday Oct 22 to construct and do finish work on a new multi-use trail at Heil Valley Ranch.  Temporarily known as the “Heil 2 Trail,” it will connect the new trailhead at the old ranch complex to the existing trail system farther up the Geer Canyon valley.

BATCO will provide lunch at the end of the work project (sandwiches and soft drinks or a beer!) afterwards.  Please RSVP to Chris Morrison at chris-morrison@comcast.net so we can know how much food to order.

We will start work near the existing Heil trailhead and will be relatively close to our vehicles and restrooms throughout the project.

Schedule:  Meeting time:  8:30 am / Ending time: 1:00 pm

Location:  “The Party Barn” (across from the Heil Valley Ranch Trailhead parking lot) 1955-3299 Geer Canyon Drive, Boulder, CO 80302.
Click for Map.

Directions from Foothills Highway US 36 (about halfway between Boulder and Lyons).  Turn west on Lefthand Canyon Drive at the Greenbriar Inn.  Turn north (right) on Geer Canyon Drive, and travel straight for 1.5 miles.  The Heil Valley Ranch Open Space parking lot will be on your right; instead, turn left here.

Weather:  The weather in Colorado is unpredictable no matter the time of year.  It is important that you bring warm and waterproof clothing that you can work in, as we will try to complete the work even in slightly inclement weather (cold temps, light rain/snow!).  We will let you know as soon as possible if we need to cancel/postpone due to more severe weather predictions.

What You Should Bring
Drinking water (2-3 liters)
Snacks
Sunscreen
Work gloves (if you have a special preference) otherwise we will provide them
Sturdy shoes/boots to work and hike to the worksite
Layers of clothes
Rain gear
Hat
Binoculars or camera (optional)

Boulder County will provide:
Snacks
Work gloves
Extra Water
First aid kit
All necessary tools

Volunteers are a very important part of our shared public lands.  We guarantee that once you’ve worked on a trail you will always treasure it and take a stewardship interest in its success.

We look forward to seeing you on October 22! Please feel free to contact either of us if you have any additional questions.
